![]() There are 10 in total, and they add excellent variety to what was already a massive collection. The biggest highlight for this final DLC to me is the new weaponry. It is fitting that this third DLC in the expansion trilogy focuses on the endgame after the previous two added so much to the early and middle parts of the game. The new biomes are titled the Infested Shipwreck and the Lighthouse, and the final area is where you’ll cap off (for now?) the main story of this game. The Queen & The Sea does the same here adding in three new late-game biomes featuring a plethora of crazy new weaponry, difficult enemies, a ton of new outfits, and a “true ending” to the game tied to its excellent boss fight. Rise of the Giant introduced a new ending that added greatly to the overall story along with new areas, items, & enemies. This rot destroys the minds of anyone it inhabits and it has turned this island kingdom into a hell on Earth. Originally a game with little story, and only hints to the greater narrative, Motion Twin slowly built up the story of Dead Cells and how everything comes down to The Malaise. The story of Dead Cells has slowly been built up through the game’s many (and mostly free) updates. This review will focus on the third but know that it really is the end of a trilogy, and it’s an excellent one. Created by Evil Empire in tandem with the main game’s developer Motion Twin the first two DLC’s were solid setups for this final piece. ![]() Twenty-four of them were free and The Queen & the Sea caps off the trilogy of paid story expansions that started with The Bad Seed & Fatal Falls. ![]() I did a review in 2021 of the base game which you can find located here that is spoiler-free.ĭead Cells has seen an incredible twenty-seven official updates since version 1.0 launched back in May of 2017. The Bad Seed DLC introduces 3 new Biomes at the early stages of the game the Arboretum, the Swamp, and the Heart of the Swamp housing the new boss for the biomes the mama tick, 5 new enemies, 6 new items, and 13 new outfits themed around the DLC.This review has light spoilers for the original main game release of Dead Cells, so fair warning if you haven’t played it yet. The Fatal Falls DLC introduces 3 new biomes at the middle section of the run the Fractured shrines, the Undying Shores, and the Nest housing the new boss for the biomes the Scarecrow, 8 new enemies, 7 new items, and 10 new outfits themed around the DLC. The Bad Seed DLC introduces 3 new Biomes at the early stages of the game the Arboretum, the Swamp, and the Heart of the Swamp housing the new boss for the biomes the mama tick, 5 new enemies, 6 new items, and 13 new outfits themed around the DLC.The Fatal Falls DLC introduces 3 new biomes at the middle section of the run the Fractured shrines, the Undying Shores, and the Nest housing the new boss for the biomes the Scarecrow, 8 new enemies, 7 new items, and 10 new outfits themed around the DLC.This Bundle contains both the Fatal Falls DLC and the Bad Seed DLC. Dead Cells is clearly part of the last group, a rare breed of games that get you addicted by killing you over and over again, but masterfully pulling you back in every time. There aren’t too many good roguelike action platformers out there, but those that are really great are even fewer. It makes you want to keep coming back even when you fail. It is the marriage and apotheosis of decades of Metroidvania design and the surging popularity of difficult Roguelike games. Overall Dead cells have 25 total levels/biomes, but you will not go through them all in a single run you will go through at least 6 levels/biomes, not including boss areas, 90 weapons and skills, and hours of unadulterated fun.ĭead Cells is a masterpiece. ![]() Explore the procedurally generated maps, take a moment and admire the view, choose which biomes you want to go to Ossuary, Sewers, or Ramparts? Once you finish a biome you get to unlock a permanent Upgrade that stays with you even after you die, these abilities can also open new paths to reach your objective.Dead cells have a challenging but fair combat system, gather an arsenal of weapons and spells each with unique gameplay effects, you can also dodge roll like other souls like games if the enemy is overwhelming you.Dying is part of the learning process the more you play the game the more you get better you will also unlock permanent buffs like weapon upgrades on your runs. Dead cells build from the Metroidvanias that came before it, go off and explore the large map to get access to hidden areas to get bonuses to help you on your run. Dead Cells is a combination of two different game genres Metroidvania’s and Roguelite’s meaning it has the large maps and exploration of Metroidvania’s and the permadeath and randomness of Roguelike games RougeVania as we like to call it.
